IELTS to CLB Conversion for Canadian Immigration

Canada's immigration system doesn't use raw IELTS band scores directly — it converts each skill to a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level using an official IRCC conversion chart. This IELTS to CLB converter applies that same official chart to your scores.

💡 Quick Summary

Each of the four IELTS skills converts to CLB independently, using its own threshold table — listening and reading use different cutoffs than writing and speaking, so don't assume a single band score maps the same way across skills.

Why CLB Matters for Express Entry

Your CLB levels directly determine your Express Entry CRS language points (in each of the four skills), and many programs also set minimum CLB thresholds for eligibility — for example, CLB 7 is a common minimum for Federal Skilled Worker eligibility, and higher CLB levels unlock significantly more CRS points.

Converting Each Skill Separately

Because listening, reading, writing, and speaking each have their own IELTS-to-CLB threshold table, it's common to see slightly different CLB levels across your four skills even with similar IELTS band scores — this is expected and reflects the official conversion, not an error.

Next Steps After Converting

Once you have your CLB levels for all four skills, use our language test points calculator to see your exact Express Entry CRS language points, or check your specific program's minimum CLB requirements to confirm eligibility.

This tool applies IRCC's published IELTS-to-CLB conversion chart. Conversion charts are occasionally updated — always confirm the current official chart on the IRCC website before relying on this for an application decision.
