Complete Guide & Formula for the Post-Workout Recovery Time Calculator
Training the same muscle group before it has recovered can blunt progress and raise injury risk. This post-workout recovery time calculator estimates how long you need before your next hard session, based on intensity, muscle group size, sleep, and age. It answers the common question of how long to rest between leg workouts, or any other muscle group, for your specific training intensity.
💡 How It's Calculated
Base recovery hours (12–48, by intensity) × muscle group factor (0.75 for small muscles, 1.0 for large) × age factor (up to 1.25x for 50+), plus 3 extra hours for every hour of sleep below 7.
What Affects Recovery Time
- Workout intensity: A near-max effort session needs far more recovery than a light workout.
- Muscle group size: Large muscle groups (legs, back) generally take longer to recover than small ones (arms, calves).
- Sleep quality: Poor sleep slows muscle repair and extends the recovery window.
- Age: Recovery capacity tends to decrease somewhat with age.
Typical Recovery Windows by Intensity
| Intensity | Base Recovery Time |
|---|---|
| Low | ~12 hours |
| Moderate | ~24 hours |
| High | ~36 hours |
| Max Effort | ~48 hours |
